ORIENTATION TO PASTORAL WORK, Session 2.1 – October 20, 2020

Going on to perfection in pastoral work involves three realities: first learning, then doing, and repeating this cycle until you get it right. Matthew 28:20 “ … teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age.”

PAYING THE RENT: What specifically does your congregation expect from their pastor?
What does it mean to be reliable?
What does it mean to be trustworthy?
What does your congregation request of you?
What decisions are made by the pastor, shared, or delegated to a layperson?
What tasks are done by the pastor, shared, or delegated to a layperson?
How are you doing with your stewardship of your congregation’s paperwork?

How are you doing with your stewardship of influence?

2. Center for Parish Development Church Growth Principle: the essential characteristic of a growing church is this:
The laity … are excited … about what is happening … in their church.
How are you doing with your stewardship of lay excitement?

3. Routines, Customs and Traditions: It is a profoundly erroneous truism that we should cultivate the habit of thinking of what we are doing. The precise opposite is the case. Civilization advances by extending the number of operations we can perform without thinking about them. (A routine is an example of planning done in advance that can be repeated. Also, like a recipe.)
How are you doing with your congregation’s routines, customs, and traditions?
How do these cooperate with your own and family routines, customs, and traditions?

4. Problems – temporary, chronic and systemic … 1978 Southern Baptist Theological Seminary professor quote: “The average “honeymoon” in a Southern Baptist church, denomination wide, is 18 months. As trust develops, the congregation begins to reveal the real problems and issues they struggle with. The average tenure of a Southern Baptist pastor, denomination wide, is 22 months.”
How are you doing with your stewardship of your congregation’s problems?

5. Experience Principle: do you have 9 years of experience or one year repeated 9 times?
Are you making progress or having the same year over and over?

Listening (and Listening Meetings) help clarify the rent. And build community.
